I am a mother and wife of two Type 1 Diabetics. Managing diabetes is a way of life for us. We are also avid travelers to Disney. Because of my passion for Disney, I have become an Authorized Disney Destination Planner. We have been traveling to Disney for the past 4 years with both of my guys having Type 1. It is my passion to help families and share my knowledge of the parks in order to help them have the most magical vacation that they can. Is there a way that I can notify the members of this site of my knowledge and skills so that they can feel more at ease and relax during their trips? Disney can be overwhelming, especially to the newly diagnosed. This truly is a passion of mine and I would really like to help all that I can. Please let me know if there is a way that I can share more with your members.

Hi, We are taking our family to Disney in May.  We had the trip planned 2 years ago, right before we were to go our then 8 yr old was diagnosed with type 1.  We postponed the trip till now.  We have our travel emergency prescription, our letter from our clinic.  We know to take our supplies on board with us, and a lot of snacks.  Is there anything else we need to do?  I'm nervous, but excited to go.  Joey is almost 10, this month,.  And  and we have a 14 yr old.  Can you tell us anything that we need to know? Any tips are welcome.  No food allergies, or hangups.  I know that lines at food vendors can be long, and water is a must to have with us.  What do we do with our backpack when we go on the rides? Do you take advantage of getting the "pass" to go to the front of the line? How does that work?
Thanks for sharing information with us, we appreciate any info you can give us.

I am so excited to hear about your trip.  Your kids will have a blast.  There is so much to share.  I can get you completely prepared. There are some tips I can list here but there is so much more.  I would love to get the chance to actually speak with you.  Some of the basics are: definitely take a backpack.  You can whatever you need in there - and that does mean you can pack your own snacks.  The adrenaline from being at the parks can either spike or drop the blood sugar - this varies for each child.  We usually pack small candies (Pez 10 crbs and Smarties 9 crbs) as quick pick me ups for the lines.  We also include fruit snacks, bottles of water and other snackie type things.  Anything that will help to get through the lows quickly.  But also watch for the highs.  Recently my son's blood sugar has been spiking with the added adrenaline.  He used to drop constantly and my husband still does drop.  They will check your bags at the entrance but they are not looking for outside snacks, so take whatever you need in.  when you go on the rides, you can put the backpack between your feet and it should stay.

You can definitely take advantage of the Fast Pass whenever you can.

Take your time and pace yourselves.  It is definitely hot in Florida in May.  We were there last year and had fun, but we were very warm.  Since your kids are older and probably stay up as late as possible, use the afternoons to head back and cool off.  They could probably keep going, but with the heat, I suggest a few moments to cool off in the resort pool.  This way everyone can feel refreshed and hit the parks for the evening fun.  Also then they stay up late and shut the place down!!

Did you get the dining plan?  Have you made your dining reservations yet?  There are some lines of communication that need to be established with the resturants and that can be handled with an authorized planner.  Did you set this trip up with an authorized planner or did you do it online?  If you did use a planner, there are a lot of preparations that the planner can take care of before you even get there.  If you don't have one, contact me at Robyn@travelwiththemagic.com.  My services are 100% free.

Go ahead and contact me when you can at the above email.  I have information on the "pass" but it can be tricky and I would like to discuss that more extensively with you.

There are some things that if you forget, you might find at guest services.  For example, if you forget a sharps container, they have one at the desk.  If you are on the pump and something goes wrong and you need emergency supplies, contact your pump company, they should have a rep in the area that can take care of you.  I know Medtronics does.  You can get a free refrigerator for the room if you have medical needs - which you do.

I have many more tips.  Please contact me so we can discuss them further.  If you have any other thoughts or concerns, let me know and I will help you the best that I can.

Tina - I would absolutely LOVE to help you with planning your next trip.  Disney is an utter passion of mine and helping others plan their vacation is a wonderful priveledge.  I do understand the challenges that present themselves at Disney.  But hopefully, with the knowledge that I have learned through the years (and many tricks), I can help your family having an amazing trip.  My goal is to help you  and take the stress off of you with the planning so it won't be so overwhleming.  I can help you with resort selection, dining reservations and a custom itinerary just for your family.  What I have seen that has happened to my son over the years and that the reaction his blood sugar has to the excitement and adrenaline has changed.  He use to drop low with all of the excitement, now he constantly runs high.  Keep in touch.  My services are absolutely free.  Here is my email  Robyn@travelwiththemagic.com   Hold on to that and lets keep in touch.  You can also find me on FB  (Robyn Adams).  I usually post many updates and specials there. i look forward to working with you in the fall!!

Disney is the easiest place to vacation with diabetes. They are so accommodating to their guests. We get a loaner pump from the pump company before we go. Obviously we get a room with a fridge, which I would get with or without diabetes. Then just go to guest services for a guest service pass. Its wonderful, bypass all the lines. No worrying that your child has to stand out in the heat for long periods of time. We have been there quite a few times and just requested the GSP we never had any trouble getting it and it includes all the members of your party. Of course we brought a doctors note but they never asked to see it. Disney really knows how to treat their guest and make the trip truly magical. It's so simple, just ask.
Enjoy your trip.

Wow, we were there 2 years ago (my daughter had been diagnosed with type 1 about 4 months before) and when we asked for the "pass" we were told no, we could not get one.  I don't remember their exact reason, but I think they said something like we could just use the fast pass and maybe something about planning ahead and/or waiting in the shade.  I was very surprised since we even had a letter from our endocronologist, but didn't know what else to do besides express our displeasure and then accept their answer.

I am so sorry that you had problems getting the pass.  You are not the first that I have heard that from.  For you next trip, please keep me in mind.  I have been accumulating success stories from other guests and I would love to share their tips with you on how to get the GAC.  For us it is a golden ticket and helps so much when dealing with Diabetes and the heat.
