Know your rights! Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a national law that protects qualified individuals from discrimination based on their disability. Type 1 diabetes is included. Click on the link to learn more:

Any other helpful link regarding the 504 plan?  Post them  so we can help each other!

More great info if you are misinformed  about the 504:

First, get in touch with the ADA and ask for their anti-discrimination packet. It will
include all of the information that you need to get a 504 plan together
for your child. 1-800=...diabetes. Contact Crystal Jackson there
Cjackson@diabetes.org. You are getting jerked around by the school
and they do it all the time because you don't know what your child's
rights are under Section 504. The school will fight the contents because you can sue them if they don't follow the 504 plan. You can
also sue them if they don't give your child a 504 plan in a timely manner.

I knew to ask for this right up front. My son was diagnosed during the summer and I called the school and asked for a meeting to set up a 504.  They have been pretty good about giving us the accomodations we requested. Some of which are standard like:

Allowing him to test in class
Allowing him to leave class to test, get water, or use the restroom at will
Not penalizing him for missed days due to diabetes
Allowing him extra time to complete class assignments
Training school staff on how to administer glucagon

Another thing we added was allowing him to use his cell phone during school hours to text me his numbers and discuss his insulin dosages.
