Wow- I thought we were the only ones with this problem. Hi there, our son is eight years old, a type one diabetic and diagnosed with Asperger's about 6 weeks ago. Hi is a little professor and has anxieties such as nail biting, chewing shirts and  likes playing with water. He does well at school academically but finds it hard to make and keep friends in the playground. In the classroom he is very restless, fidgety and although ahead in his work was quite disruptive in his 'Aspie'
way. We had an amzing result with Ritlin which we nearly didn't try- we hated the thought. Now we are so glad we did as it seemed to help calm the anxieties and confusion and provides Tim with more clarity and concentration. It had not 'drugged him' in any kind of haze. Ritalin will not cure aspergers but for Tim it calms the storm and allows other children to have more social interaction with him. Tims writing has improved, he has stopped chewing, and even his co-ordination improved. Every child is different and what works for one may not work for another- but there is no 'user manual' for having a child with Type 1 AND Asperger's, so trust your intstincts.

Hi, I am so glad they did this more than one section.  My son has Type 1 and Asperger's as well.  He will be 12 next month, diagnosed with T1D at age six and Asperger's at age nine.  He is not currently on any meds other than his insulin so I can't really help with the original question but I am excited to find other families with the same issues.

My son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 8 and AS at 10, he just turned 11. We are going through the same thing contimplating meds for his anxiety and depression. He struggles academically I think because everything is so black and white with him. I agree that early diagnosis would have been so helpful and we could have directed his education in the proper way. I am so glad this was started because you really feel like you are the only one dealing with these issues. Hope to hear a lot more from you all!
