My eight year old son's blood sugar drops significantly when playing in the snow.  We give him about 28 grams of carbs (& test) before sending him out to play.  We then check his blood sugar (and repeat the carbs) every fifteen to twenty minutes.  It works for the most part.

I was wondering if anyone else has a child who experiences this, and strategies that you've used to handle this.

Thanks!

Hi There.

Our son has the same issue.  It takes more energy to regulate the body temperature in cold weather so more carbs are required.  We are on a pump so we reduce his basal rate by 20% and give a 20g carb snack and test each hour.  A general rule of thumb is 15g carbs for every 30 - 45 mintues of exercise/heavy activity.

Hope this helps.

I created a team made up of friends and family who will participate with me in a triathlon to raise money for the JDRF.  I'm looking for a creative name that goes with my son's name, Bode (pronounced Bo-Dee).  Does anyone have any suggestions?
