insurance switching glucose tester

my five year old daughter was diagnosed just over a month ago with type 1. we have been using one type of glucose tester this whole time that she likes and is comfortable with, now our insurance won't pay for test strips for it anymore.  they want us to use a whole other tester that we don't like.  is this normal?  will they switch testers on us every couple of years or so?  should we just suck it up and pay out of pocket for the test strips we do like?  it all seems so wrong....
