I have two children with type 1 diabetes.  Our daughter was diagnosed seven years ago at age 6 and uses the insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor (at times).  She is more "fragile" in how her diabetes responds.  We have a son, who is nearly 15 who has been diagnosed for about three years we think.  He was adopted from Ethiopia about a year and a half ago and is doing wonderfully.  Our knowledge of diabetes with our daughter really made adopting our son the best option for him.
We have eight children, five boys, three girls, three children by birth and five through adoption.  We homeschool and are very active in community theatre, 4H, church ministry, sports and just about every other think you can think of.  We live in a rural area and have a small hobby farm.
We are in East Central Wisconsin, about 30 minutes east of Green Bay.  Not near any town specifically, but between Kewaunee, Denmark and Luxemburg, if that makes any sense to anyone.

When our daughter was diagnosed, some dear friends had walked this road with their oldest son (at age six also) and were two years down the road by then.  I am so grateful for all their support and help as we had so much to learn and as we all know, it is such a confusing and emotional and devastating time.  We would love to be there as support for other families, and we all learn so much from each other.  Just recently we met a 15 year old who had never met another kid with type 1!  He was so surprised when Kiley pulled out her pump and meter!  Our kids need to know that they aren't the only ones out there - they really can support teach other a ton.  My daughter had been insistent that when we adopted again that no child be older than her (she is our middle bio child) however, when she heard about the boy who would become our son - she stated that it would be wonderful to have someone else in the family with diabetes and that his age did not matter - diabetes trumped age!  LOL!  And they have such a neat relationship - though that has as much to do with personality, but they can help each other so much and share their thoughts and struggles.

Hi Mommy Turtle,
It sounds like God is blessing your family in much every way.  I hope diabetes is a blessing in disguise.
I wanted to put this out there to find some teen boys with diabetes in the area.  My son was diagnosed Dec 2009.  We haven't met other kids with diabetes.  I was considering a camp this summer, if anyone has any recomendations.  May all our kids grow in wisdom and stature and favor with God and man. Amen

Hello!  My name is Crystal and the Diabetic in our house is our 4 year old Jonas. He was diagnosed on Aug 28, 2010 and is doing pretty well. First month was hard of course but he is honeymooning and other than a couple days of really high readings, he has been fairly stable.  He's 4 so he's a typical kid and is stubborn about food sometimes but we can't complain about too much right now. He's been a trooper Smiley

We are in Cedarburg and go to Wauwatosa for our Endo Smiley

John,I pulled my kids out because my daughter wasnt getting the care she needed. The teacher was calling her names and we as parents dont allow that in our home,Katie cried and said she hated school. We had a meeting with the school and they told Katie she was lying and then said I was also lying because of an incident that happened when Katie wasnt allowed to use the bathroom when she needed to.When i asked for about  the 10 time if people had been trained to use the glucagon the nurse replied if they need to use it they can read the instructions!!!I was  done, they either need to have further training on type 1 or realize I was looking out for the best interest of my daughter. These are not the only issues we have had in the last 2 years but it was the boiling point for me.I would really like to send her to camp so she can meet other kids with type 1.I am looking up the name of the one you posted so thank you.Susan

Hello,

I was looking to connect with other parents in the Kewaskum area 40 mile radius. My son is turning 11 this month. He was diagnosed in August of 2004 and just finally got him on the pump in July. I would love for him to meet with other children his age. He also has a younger brother who is not diabetic and is 7 years old. I would also like to connect with other parents who do what we do and understand what life is like caring for them day in and day out.

Thank you,
Bonnie

Wisconsin  ADA has one of the best diabetes camps in the USA. It is at the Lions camp in Rosholt,WI- near Stevens Point. The camp is beautiful with wonderful air-conditioned  cabins with nice bathrooms and showers. The camp staff is wonderful and the ADA provided medical staff is the best! You can find out about the camp through the Wi ADA office. The other huge plus- most of the cost is picked up by the Lions Club. So the cost is low. My son said it was the best week of the year! He went for the past 6 years but he is now 17 and as "aged" out. He will return as a volunteer when he turns 18.

Hi! I am Niki and we have 2 daughters, Paige (9) and Hope (6). Hope was dx'd when she was 15 months old and we are excitedly starting the pump at the end of November. We live near the IL border in SE WI.
